Having a strong belief that a sound strategy and a smooth operation set up are critical to the growth of a company, Dr. Derrick Tan founded 1st Phase Operations in 2002 to help companies, both MNCs and startups, achieve just that. Through 1st Phase Operations, he offers a wide range of services, from business strategy planning and facility set ups to safety consultancy, to address issues pertinent to most biotech operations. Derrick has since helped more than 30 pharma and biotech companies, including several big pharma companies, with their various operational and business development needs. Derrick has also been an active contributor towards the biotech scene in Asia, speaking at biotech events, judging biotech business plan competitions, and offering seminars on biotech and biosafety related topics.
While managing 1st Phase, Derrick also served terms as the Director of the Biopolis Shared Facilities (BSF) at Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and Deputy Director of the Biomedical Sciences group at the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). At A*STAR, he led the revamp of the unit’s operations as well as conceived and implemented the unit’s online BioSupplies sales portal. At EDB, Derrick led the R&D unit and directed the development of the biomedical sciences R&D strategy to advance Singapore’s Biomedical Sciences industry.
Prior to starting 1st Phase, Derrick was the pioneering employee and Operations Manager of S*BIO Pte Ltd, a Singapore based biotech joint venture between the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and Chiron Corporation. During his tenure at S*BIO, he helped established the company’s key areas of operations and directed the development of the company’s state-of-the-art drug discovery facility in Singapore. Before that, he also helped Lynk Biotechnologies Pte Ltd, another biotech startup in Singapore, initiated its research program as its Head of New Applications and Technology Division in 2000.
Derrick is also the co-author of the Singapore PharmBio Guide. He conceptualized the publication in 2003 with the aim of providing relevant operational startup information to the biotech industry. Published in partnership with Marshall Cavendish Business Information Pte Ltd and Greener Grass Communications LLP, the guide also contains the first comprehensive directory of life sciences industry vendors and service providers in Singapore. Now in its eighth edition, the guide has been very well received by the industry and remains the authoritative publication for the biomedical sciences industry in Singapore. In 2009, Derrick co-authored and published the inaugural Singapore Medical Engineering and Technology Guide to correspondingly provide relevant operational information to the local medical technology community.
Derrick received his Masters of Science and Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania and graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Science degree. He has also received trainings in biosafety and various facility design topics, including biocontainment (BSL-3) and cGMP facility designs.
